There is a strong connection between migration and the arts. On one hand, the relationship between diaspora and art is part of the dispersion of a community from its homeland to different parts of the world. On the other, it is precisely through the arts that emigrant creatives and their descendants can strengthen their bond with their roots. Art and creativity become the expressive medium through which individuals keep their culture and ancestral emotions alive. This relationship ties not only the emigrant artist’s or creative’s work to their origins, but becomes even more fascinating when extended to descendants—those who connect with their ancestral culture not through direct experience but through the transmission of memory across generations.
ISCHELIU / CALL is a residency dedicated to writing one’s own “roots diary.” The project was launched in 2022 by 369gradi, with the support of the Fondazione di Sardegna and the Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission.
The residency program brings together, for one week in the evocative setting of the medieval village of Rebeccu (a hamlet of Bonorva), a working group made up of Sardinian emigrants and descendants selected through the open call. Guided by professional tutors, participants are invited to trace and share a multilayered journey, experimenting with diverse forms of encounter and multidisciplinary dialogue.
This year, Ischeliu begins with an invitation to deep listening: the soundscapes led by Alessandro Olla become the starting point of a creative journey that leads participants to write, take notes, and leave traces. These words transform into intimate diaries and dramaturgical materials capable of reflecting the resonance of a shared experience.
Through the audio portraits curated by Radioframmenti, each voice finds its own form and becomes part of a collective mosaic, where the personal intertwines with the communal. Elio Mazzacane will help gather these fragments of sound and memory, shaping them into a documentary narrative that is never just testimony, but a living memory.
Every year, Ischeliu creates something unique and unrepeatable. Yet what remains is never only the memory of a week’s work: it is a collective, participatory artwork—a shared mark that takes shape and breath through the languages of video and audio.
Ischeliu 2025 is a project by 369gradi, supported by Fondazione di Sardegna, under the patronage of the Comune di Bonorva.
